Commotion (Tumulto)

People say that if you see a spider you have to pay attention: spiders travel in pairs and if one is there another will soon appear. Other animals, like deer, usually live in herds and very seldom are seen alone. I am convinced that this is also true about confusion. When something out of the ordinary happens , we can be sure that other extraordinary things are going to happen as well.

Since last Thursday my life has been turned upside down. Everything started with my knee surgery, a very simple arthroscopic procedure from which I was hoping to recover the same day. Well, it turned out that it wasn’t so simple …

I had the surgery at Penn Presbyterian, a huge teaching hospital in Philadelphia, where medical students learn from the best professors and doctors offer their patients state-of- the- art services.  The first thing I learned when I got there was that I was expected to know how to spell. “Can you please spell your name to me?” The first nurse who took care of me asked. I spelled it for her. Then another nurse came to take me somewhere else and asked me again to spell my name. A third came and repeated the request. By the time I met the doctor, I had spelled my name 6 times, and after every time the nurses checked on the bracelet that I had with my name to make sure I was correct. What if I had made a mistake? Then, the doctor, who had already treated me before and had recommended the surgery, came and asked what kind of procedure I was having and where? What???? Well, he explained, looking at my bewildered face, he had to ask this question for the patient’s safety, to make sure that nobody got operated on the wrong part of the body… Okay, sounded good…

After the spelling and memory games were over, it turned out that the anesthesiologist wanted to discuss literature. Once, when I had a surgical procedure done in France, the doctor talked with me about Brazilian literature. This time, the American doctor asked me about some Portuguese authors. I wondered how come I never met people interesting like that in my daily life but always meet them in hospitals…
When it came time for the surgery itself, it was pretty neat. I asked the doctor if I could watch it, which astonished him. He finally agreed and I watched through the TV him moving his instruments inside my knee and performing the procedure on the meniscus. I never knew that my bones were so white. That was a surprise!

Later in the afternoon, supported by the crutches provided by the hospital, I left. In my innocence, I had thought that after the surgery I would go home, rest a bit and start working. Well, I was in for another surprise. The anesthesia given by the doctor – morphine – knocked me out for the rest of the day. On Friday, I was still not in my sane mind. Finally, on Saturday, when I was ready to work, something very unusual happened: the power was off for the entire day on my street and since I need the Internet to work, I couldn’t. With my knee still hurting, it was out of the question for me to go find a coffee shop with Internet. The source of the problem with the power took awhile to be diagnosed and fixed. Apparently, the problem originated  from some wires located close to our block’s mail box.

Yesterday, a crew from the telephone company came and worked all day in the same spot where the workers from the power company had been on Saturday. I was afraid that they would knock the Internet out again. It seems that when one company fixes something, another comes and breaks it. Miraculously, this didn’t happen.

Today, I woke up, looked out of the window and saw two police cars. Since they never appear in my neighborhood, I got curious. I dressed and limped outside to discover there was a house on fire on the next block. Luckily the elderly couple who lived there had been rescued by the firefighters and the fire was already under control. But there was still a lot of smoke, many police cars, firefighters, water company workers, insurance workers, and so on.

On my way back to the house, I realized that the mail boxes were gone. I asked one lady about it and she told me that the cable company had spotted some fire on the wires underneath the mail boxes and that from now on we would need to get our mail at the post office. What???? How come nobody informed us of that? Who had come and taken the mail boxes: the power company, the cable company, or the post office? Hospitals can be very different from one part of the world to another, but when it comes to a mess regarding construction work, every country is the same…

Well, I just came back from the post office. There, I was informed that I could not get my mail: it was in the truck with the mailman. Until I filled out a form, asking for the post office to hold my mail, the postman would be carrying my mail around in his truck, even though he could see with his own eyes that there wasn’t a mail box for our neighborhood anymore. I imagined writing a short story where the mail accumulates inside the truck until eventually the mailman can’t leave his truck anymore…

Now, I am back at my house trying to update my blog and wondering what will happen next. It has been hard to concentrate on my work. My knee swells if I sit at the desk and keep my leg down. I have to work sitting on my bed, with my legs stretched. But my cat, who loves proximity, is convinced that there is no better place for him to sit than over my mouse. If I shoo him, he goes and sits on my papers. I shoo him again, he pretends that he is going to leave me alone, then sneaks and sits on the mouse pad. When I am losing my patience, he curls up like a ball and takes a nap. Cats’ naps take priority over any problems of the world.

TUMULTO

A primeira enfermeira me perguntou.

Nao custa nada confirmar e reconfirmar....
    Beijos e boa recuperacao.
