Millions Of Christmas Balls (Um milhão de bolas de Natal)

Everyday when I wake up and go downstairs to the kitchen, I stop at the living room to collect at least two Christmas ornaments that are on the floor. I know very well that I didn’t leave them there the night before, and I also remember hearing sounds of Christmas balls being kicked around the living room before I fell to sleep. But the only possible individual responsible for grabbing the balls from the tree and playing with them as if he were on a soccer field, isn’t saying anything. While I bend down for the millionth time to pick up the balls and hang them again on the tree, he just looks at me with very innocent eyes and immediately starts meowing because, after all, it is time for his breakfast. Besides, my cat never confesses his sins.

When I was assembling the Christmas tree, I knew that this would happen. Every year is the same. I hang the balls and my cat gets them to play. I put water under the tree in a bowl, so it won't get dry. But guess who goes and drinks the water? For my cat, Christmas means only that he gets two new toys: the water for the tree and the balls.

And what does Christmas mean to me? The other day, when I was assembling the tree, I was thinking about the millions of people who, at that moment, were probably doing the same. We all complain if we have to spend two hours stuck in traffic or waiting for a doctor’s appointment. However, we are glad to spend two or more hours hanging very fragile Christmas ornaments, with all the patience in the world. If we were to add up all the hours that everybody who decorates a Christmas tree spends in this task yearly, how many hours would it total? But we don’t complain about spending these hours this way. This is, after all, a work of love.

Even though Christmas is a time for shopping and partying, it never fails to amaze me how many people stop their busy lives and, at least for a few days, decide to do some works of love. I remember a very mean manager from a company for which I worked who, one year, bought a bicycle for a poor kid. After I saw what she had done, I started to see her in a different way. I also learned everybody has something good inside, even though we might think the opposite.

For me, Christmas is a time for celebration; a time to think about people who I haven’t seen in a while and send them Christmas cards; a time to be thankful for what I have and try to share at least something with the ones who have not; a time to think about the Good and forget about the Bad in the world. After all, we have the rest of the year to worry about bad things.

My cat, of course, probably thinks that Christmas is just a time to drive me nuts with his games. I wonder if he would stop his games if I were to give him a very small mouse for Christmas.

The Hostess And Her Visitors (A anfitriã e seus visitantes)

It is always interesting for a writer to find out who her readers are. If you write a book, it is difficult to figure out where your readers live, unless they write you a letter or go to a book signing. But in the Internet world where everything can be tracked, I can see where the readers of Brazilian Soul are coming from. There are readers from Timisoara, Columbus, Silva Jardim, Haifa, and so on. Timisoara is the 2nd largest city of Romania, with 312.000 inhabitants. Columbus is the capital of the state of Ohio, in the US, and has 712.000 inhabitants. Silva Jardim is located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, and has only 23.000 inhabitants. Haifa is the 3rd largest city of Israel with 264.900 inhabitants. I don’t know anyone in these cities and have never been there. I wonder why these people visit my blog. What do I say that could possibly interest readers from such different places?

I understand that my family and friends might be interested in what I have to say. Why would these strangers choose to read a blog with my memories, thoughts and dreams, among other millions of blogs available in the internet? Writing the blog, I feel that I am the hostess of a party where the guests stop by to get some entertainment here and there, make some comments, or just take a look and leave without saying a word…

I think that nobody decides, one day, that he or she is going to be a writer. It is not like oh, well, I don’t know what to do with my life so I am going to be a writer. The writer usually finds himself writing without even understanding why. All of a sudden, you look at old drawers and find pieces of stories written here and there, in notebooks, napkins, receipts, prescriptions… anything that looks like a paper is good enough for a writer to jot down his thoughts. Writing seems to be a bug that, once it gets to the person, becomes resistant to any medication.

Among my relatives, there are many who were infected by this bug. My aunt, Nancy Lima Baptista, published the book “Imagens Pantaneiras.” Another aunt, Martha Rita Baptista, published “Cantos De Amor e Saudade” and writes the blog Cá Entre Nós.My cousin, Maria Isabel Lima Baptista, published the novels “Santa Blanca, Uma Casa No Fundo Do Rio” e “As Estrelas Não Dormem” and writes the blog Diários de Maria. My niece, Valéria Piassa Polizzi, published the books “Depois Daquela Viagem,” “Papo De Garota” e “Enquanto Estamos Crescendo.” Her first book was translated in Spanish, German and Italian. And let us not forget my uncle, José Feliciano Baptista Neto, who was the editor of several newspapers in my hometown.

With so many writers in the family, when I started editing the Portuguese version of the literary website Agonia.net ( http://agonia.net/ ) I thought that I would ask the help of my family to jumpstart it. As always, they were there to give me a hand. Now, if you access the website, click on the Brazilian flag, and go to where it says “cronicas,” on the top of the 1st page, you will find an essay from Valéria – O gato de livros – in which she describes, with her usual talent, the life of a cat in a library. In the same section, there is Martha’s essay – As Donas do Pantanal – in which the women from the swamp region come to life with imagination and beauty.

I would like to invite my readers, these familiar and unfamiliar faces that honor me by reading my blog, to stop at the Agonia.net site and read the beautiful stories of Valéria and Martha. There are also stories of others talented writers in Portuguese and other languages that deserve to be checked out.

My cat admires the world and I admire him. He is probably thinking about what he will do next, while I am afraid of what he will do next. You see, last week I had left beans soaking in water overnight and when I got to the kitchen, in the morning, he had put his paws inside the bowl, spread the beans over the counter and drunk some of the water. The same day, he peed in the living room, found some cleaning material and started kicking it around, and hid my daughter’s headband under the refrigerator. Then, he went to sleep in someone’s lap. He doesn’t favor a particular lap. He will take any lap. My cat is very democratic and very affectionate. How can I hate him when he purrs and tries to get closer and closer to me, staring at me with eyes full of love? Of course, I threaten to kill him once a day when he gets into mischief. But he knows that he has a special place in my heart.

I wonder how come sometimes we hate someone but still love that person. Aren’t love and hate supposed to be opposite emotions? I also wonder why we try so hard to understand our emotions, examining them rationally, striving to find an explanation for everything. Why can’t we accept that life is a wild horse that can’t be tamed? Many times I see people – very intelligent people – doing their best to control everything in their life, not leaving any room for improvising, afraid that something might turns up in a way that they didn’t plan. They are so set in their ways that they don’t enjoy the small gifts of life that come unexpectedly. They don’t live for the present but for the future that lays ahead, the future that they planned. How surprised they get when everything turns upside down and the job that they were supposed to get in Honolulu ends up being in New York, or their boss chooses someone more flexible to the position to which they prepared so hard… They thought they were gods, in charge of the universe. Disappointed, they discover that they are, in fact, just human beings.

I try to understand why my cat peed in the living room. I theorize about the cats that had appeared on the deck and probably made him jealous. I call the veterinarian who suggests some possible reasons, not very likely. I look at the Internet for cat behavior. In the end, I am no closer to an answer than I was in the beginning. The cat is an animal, and I can’t understand the psychology of an animal. But can we understand the behavior of other human beings?

I also wonder why it is so much easier for a mother to be closer to a daughter than to a son. With my daughters, I can speak in the same language. With my son, I grasp for meanings that I seldom understand. But, when he reads aloud for me one of the romances that I wrote and I am trying to correct, this moment of intimacy is more precious than any diamond.

Sometimes I wonder why I wonder so much. Maybe I should leave to my cat the job of pondering the world. But I am sure he would rather eat my rug.

REFLEXÕES

Meu gato admira o mundo e eu admiro meu gato.

Talvez devesse deixar meu gato refletindo a respeito do mundo.
